VolleyBTN is a project demonstrating how data science tools and techniques can help answer questions about volleyball! This site was launched in January 2024 by Nessa Nyblade, although the original data collection began in Summer 2023.
Data collection, analysis and graphics generation was done using the open source statistical package R. Initial data collection involved scraping data for DI and DIII volleyball teams from the NCAA statistics website from 2013-2022 (more than 100,000 player-years for 750 teams), along with data from the individual collegiate team websites. Data scraping was done primarily using the RVest package, and data manipulation and cleaning was done in R. Data visualizations for this site are produced using the ggplot2 package unless otherwise specified. This data is being used to write articles about interesting patterns and trends in NCAA volleyball over the past decade.
